Out of these two small roadsters which one is best? ThatÂ’s the questions I am going to try and answer in this article. Both fit the specs for a traditional roadster, two seats, rear wheel drive, small engine, and the best of all, being a convertible. These are the attributes that won the roadster genre so much fame with cars like the Jaguar E type of the 60Â’s. And so with the combination of Honda reliability and BMW performance this could be an interesting question; especially important to me because these are the cars I am deciding between the S2000 and Z4 for my next purchase in the coming weeks.
The BMW Z4 has been faulted lately for having “weird” and “unBMWlike” styling, however I think that it’s a brilliant looking car, one that embodies the essence of a roadster cruiser. With its long hood and short back combined with a low and far back driving position, the Z4 is truly menacing when seen on the road. To compliment this striking design BMW has incorporated great performance qualities to further enhance the experience of driving a Z4. The guys at BMW have used a straight 6 engine with displacements at 2.5 liters or 3.0 liters, the same engine BMW uses in its 3 series. It’s this engine that has won many of BMW’s engines of the year awards. With the 3.0-liter engine the Z4 can pump out 231 hp and is electronically limited to 155 mph. Along with the great engine comes superbly handling car and level of passion normal to most European counterparts. Although a Porsche Boxster can beat the Z4 on handling alone, the BMW overall would win in a competition of speed, looks, and cost. The guys in Germany offer a plethora of transmissions, including standard manual, automatic, and even a sequential gearbox found on M3s. Among the upgrades offered are sports packages with a lower ride height and stiffer suspension as well as a premium package with the only noticeable different being wood in the cockpit. Of course there are the special guys at BMW that run a section called the M division and these guys are crazy, they will give u a Z4 M with a 343hp engine, exclusive colors, a variable M differential, and too many other extras to really count. This car truly feels like it wants to be beaten up around a track, this isn’t your daddy BMW that’s for sure.
The Honda S2000 is a limited production convertible roadster from our friends in Japan. If you look at Hondas records they donÂ’t have a lot of experience at this sort of thing but my god is it good. I was at the dealership the other day and just starting the engine and revving it was a physically pleasuring experience. And while the BMW has a nice engine and all it is nothing compared to the HondaÂ’s. ItÂ’s a 2.2 liter 4-cylinder VTEC engine and it revs all the way up to 8200 rpm!! ThatÂ’s more than almost any normal car in production (save the RX-8) with its rotor engine) When it starts to scream at around 6000 rpm you feel like you are hearing a Suzuki motocross engine. ItÂ’s a truly amazing experience. And thatÂ’s basically the HondaÂ’s party piece, although not as graceful and elegant car as the BMW, the Honda is more in your face go-cart on steroids excitement that you will never have in the BMW. Although I must admit that peak torque comes at 7000 rpm in the Honda its just such a great experience getting there that I have to say I am leaning towards getting the S2000.
