No Plans to Revive RX-7, Mazda Insists

Those expecting to glimpse a new rotary-powered Mazda sports car at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show will be in for a serious disappointment, several senior Mazda officials tell TheCarConnection.com. It’s not that the automaker isn’t exploring the idea of reviving its legendary two-seater, which went out of production last year. For the moment, though, it has its corporate hands full with the new four-seat RX-8, which is just in the midst of a global launch. There’s another problem, stresses Mazda Motors Board Member Steve Odell: limited production capacity for the new Renesis rotary engine. There’s only capacity for 60,000 of the engines a year, he notes, around what Mazda hopes to need for the RX-8, and expanding production would be “quite difficult.” Translation: extremely expensive. But there is a future for the rotary, he adds. “I’m sure we’d like” to produce other rotary-powered models, including a new RX-7, “if the demand is there.” A solid hit with the new car could be the encouragement Mazda needs. —Paul A. Eisenstein

From The Car Connection. Does this meen no rotary for the next Miata? Looks like.

Manual: Originally- 247hp Now- 238hp
Auto: Originally- 207hp Now- 197hp

Some argue the revised 238hp is still too high, with RX-8 dynos coming in around the mid-180s.

Ford/Mazda overrates their hp numbers almost as often as Nissan overrates their 0-60s

I love that car man… I just keep seeing pictures of it.. I just hate FWD.

Now I hear this..

Quote:

Dubbed as “Mazda 6 MPS Concept”, we all know in the near future this car will go into production, although the aggressively-styled bumpers might not look the same. Right now we have only the sketches, but the concept car will be shown to public in Paris motor show later this month.
The Mazda 6 MPS is powered by a 280hp engine derived from the current 2.3-litre all-alloy MZR four-cylinder engine. Predictably, the extra power is mainly contributed by a turbocharger with intercooler. It pumps out the maximum power at 6500rpm and maximum torque of 265lbft at 3500rpm, more torquey than the recently-killed RX-7. We don’t know if it retains the MZR’s continuous variable-valve timing, as the strong torque curve of turbocharged engine usually saves the need for VVT. However, Mazda has introduced their first-ever direct-injection system to this engine, thus ensure better fuel efficiency and cleaner emission to satisfy the strict Euro IV and America’s ULEV standards.

To handle the strong engine, of course, the Mazda 6 can no longer rely on the front wheels for traction. Therefore it employs a sophisticated 4-wheel-drive system with electronically controlled torque split and a Torsen rear LSD. To take advantage of the increased power, it also employs a new 6-speed manual gearbox.

Other changes include 18-inch wheels, sportier suspension setup, new seats and interior trimming. The exterior was styled by Mazda’s studio in Germany.

Although Mazda did not say, we can predict the 6 MPS will be the faster car of the company, even faster than the rotary engine RX-8, thanks to its advantage in torque.

Pimp right?

I like what Mazda is doing.

Mazda RX-7

by admin

Is the RX-7 still produced for the Japanese market? I thought the run had ended a long time ago, but this article indicates otherwise. This is a pretty damn tight RX-7 too.
Wonder what the price tag is.

final Mazda RX-7 unleashed
